Bridgeton, MO – Hunter Engineering Company recently debuted a customized version of its award-winning Road Force® balancer for use exclusively in GM dealerships.
The GM Road Force machine can operate in two balancing modes: a standard mode for non-GM vehicles and a GM mode, which uses specialized software for servicing GM vehicles.
GM Road Force software features a database containing model-specific specifications and balancing instructions to speed and ease service. Technicians can access the GM service database by selecting the vehicle via drop-down menus, keying the VIN in manually or scanning the VIN bar code using an optional bar code reader.
After entering the vehicle into the system, the technician can quickly view balance-related GM technical service bulletins and wheel and tire specifications all associated with the particular vehicle model being serviced. The GM Road Force software also provides helpful service information like mounting adaptor options, lug nut torque, and instructions for proper handling of plastic-clad wheels.
Hunter initiated the design of the GM Road Force balancer after General Motors named the Road Force as the only approved balancer for GM dealerships. GM based its approval on tests comparing the accuracy and repeatability of the Road Force to a laboratory-grade Tire Uniformity Grader (TUG), which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. The nearly identical results were both “amazing” and a “real eye-opener” for GM engineers, who endorsed the exclusive approval.
GM has also given exclusive approval to Hunter’s Direct-Fit Collets mounting adaptors. When used with the Road Force balancer, the Direct-Fit Collet design improves measurement consistency. The shorter, low-taper design fits precisely in the hub bore only, promoting accurate center-mounting and distortion-free clamping, while protecting against damage.
