What is the Most Dangerous Season for Car Accidents?

The Season with the Most Accidents is Fall for 39 of 50 U.S. States
Published: September 18, 2025

As millions of Americans prepare for holiday road trips over the next few months, a new report from CARFAX reveals a surprising truth: Fall, not Winter, is the most dangerous season to be on the road in most of the country. According to an analysis of accident data, Fall accounts for the highest percentage of crashes in 39 states, challenging the common assumption that winter weather poses the greatest threat to drivers.

The report identifies several states where the spike in autumn accidents is most pronounced, including California, Texas, New York, Illinois, and Georgia. Other states with a significant increase in Fall crashes include North Carolina, Michigan, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Wisconsin.

Why is Fall More Dangerous for Drivers?

There is a combination of factors that contribute to the elevated risk during this time of year. Diminishing daylight is a primary concern, as shorter days mean more time spent driving in the dark. According to the National Safety Council, about half of all U.S. accidents happen after the sun goes down. Drivers are twice as likely to have an accident after dusk.

Slick road surfaces also pose a significant danger. Wet leaves and other tree debris can make roads treacherous, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noting that braking on wet leaves can more than double a vehicle’s stopping distance compared to a dry road. Additionally, an increase in deer activity during their fall mating and migration season leads to a higher number of collisions, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

“Seasonal shifts can bring new risks on the road, making this a good time to slow down, stay alert, and check for maintenance or open recalls to ensure the safety of the vehicle and everyone on the road,” said Faisal Hasan, Vice President of Data Acquisition at CARFAX. “CARFAX has the most accident, damage, and service information that no one else has, offering these insights to keep drivers informed and one step ahead.”

While Fall is the most dangerous season in a majority of states, Winter remains the period with the highest number of accidents in six states: Connecticut, Oklahoma, Vermont, New Hampshire, Montana, and North Dakota.

How to Stay Safe While Driving in the Fall and Winter

To help drivers prepare for the changing conditions, CARFAX recommends several preventative measures. Slowing down is critical, as speed is a major factor in most accidents. Going slower also helps lessen the severity of an accident should it still occur.

Regular vehicle maintenance is also essential. Drivers should check their tire pressure monthly, as sudden temperature drops can cause tires to lose air. Checking the car’s battery, wiper fluid levels, and wiper blades can also prevent common cold-weather issues. This is also generally good advice this time of year so that drivers do not get stranded somewhere, accident or not. CARFAX also suggests drivers keep a winter survival kit in their vehicle year-round, containing essentials like water, a blanket, an ice scraper, road flares, a phone charger, and a first-aid kit.
