More off-lease pickups, SUVs and crossovers in 5 years, KBB says, from Automotive News.
Cars dominated the top segments of vehicles coming off lease in 2014, but the segments with the most projected off-lease growth in 2019, vs. 2014 volumes, will be SUVs, crossovers and pickups, analysts from Kelley Blue Book predicted Sunday.
That is largely a function of rising sales in the SUV, crossover and pickup segments.
In 2014, nonluxury utility vehicles represented 28 percent of new-vehicle sales but 46 percent of total industry volume growth, said Eric Ibarra, director of residual value consulting at KBB.
The shift in consumer preference is also visible in KBB’s residual value predictions for vehicles 60 months after being leased in January and February of 2015. Trucks and utility vehicles, in general, are expected to hold their sticker values better than most cars, the data reveal.
