According to Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell, January 2012 was the highest SAAR the auto industry has seen since Cash for Clunkers in August 2009. Caldwell said in a sales conference call this week January 2012 sales were up 11% from 2011. Fleet sales made up a good amount of vehicles sold in January Caldwell said.
Chrysler Group LLC reported U.S. sales of 101,149, a 44% increase compared with sales in January 2011 (70,118 units), the group’s best January sales since 2008. Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs said, “Chrysler is the surprising comeback kid — again. When Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy, there were plenty of skeptics, but the automaker has proven them wrong. Since detailing its plan for the future in November 2009, Chrysler has done everything it said it would, creating an impressive recent track record and providing confidence that it will meet its 2012 goals.”
General Motors Co. reported total sales of 167,962 vehicles in the United States in January, down 6% compared with a very strong January 2011. Cadwell said: “GM has a tough year-over-year comparison as the company did not match its high incentive spend from last January; in fact, GM’s overall incentives spend is forecasted to be down 14% year over year. Still, GM is showing strenth in smaller vehicles with good sales performances put in by the Equinox, Cruze, and Malibu. Those segments will face increasing competition this year but GM is off to a good start.”

–UPDATED: Kia Motors America reported after reaching all-time sales and market share highs in 2011, steep upward trajectory continued in the first month of 2012 with record January sales of 35,517 units, a 27.8% increase over the same period in 2011, and the brand’s 17th straight monthly sales record. With popular vehicles such as the U.S.-built[1] Optima midsize sedan and Soul urban passenger vehicle, which led January sales with 8,814 and 8,091 units sold, Kia continues to be one of the fastest growing car companies in the U.S.
“Following a year of impressive milestones and historic firsts, including the completion of the most aggressive new product launch cycle in the industry with nine vehicles in less than three years and the $100 million expansion of Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG), Kia is well positioned for future growth as we further our efforts to increase brand visibility and awareness,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and KMMG. “With several high-profile marketing initiatives on the horizon and the arrival of fuel efficient products such as the Rio 5-door and sedan that offer class-leading horsepower[2] and deliver up to 40 miles per gallon[3], Kia will continue to attract new customers to our showrooms by offering high-quality cars and CUVs with world-class design, cutting edge technologies and fun-to-drive performance.”
–UPDATED: HyundaiMotor America announced all-time record January sales of 42,694 units, up 15% versus 2011.
Despite continued tight availability at Hyundai dealers across the nation, January retail sales were up 19% from last year due to continued strong performance throughout the Hyundai line-up, with the hot-selling Elantra up 13% and Genesis/Equus sales up 27% over last year. Fleet mix remains low at nine percent as the focus remains on optimizing dealer throughput and meeting consumer demand given ongoing production capacity constraints.
“January was a good month for us as Januarys go. We set an all-time sales record for the month, saw continued stabilization in the general economy, and witnessed the Hyundai Elantra crowned as North American Car of the Year,” said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s executive vice president, national sales. “All in all, a very solid base to build off in 2012.”
