With Hurricane Sandy hitting right at the end of October, some auto analysts thought auto sales numbers would be impacted, but this was not the case. See below for comments from Edmunds.com Analysts and full sale statements from automakers.

ON GM

“Despite October typically being truck month – and GM truck sales were up – the automaker had a robust month for smaller cars. Chevrolet Cruze had a big month and Chevrolet Sonic continues to be strong. Other GM cars that posted decent results were the Buick Verano – which pushed the entire Buick brand to the plus side, despite sales declines for other Buick models – and the Cadillac ATS,” Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Michelle Krebs.

ON FORD

“October was not a stellar month for Ford, which saw sales flat with last year, and no star performances. The Fusion, which accounts for a big chunk of Ford’s total sales, was down 30 percent as the new model waits to be launched into the market. On the utility side, the Escape, revamped in June, was up, but its sibling Edge was down twice as much the Escape increased. The C-Max, which Ford is advertising as a direct competitor to the Toyota Prius, appears to be off to a decent start,” Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Michelle Krebs.

ON CHRYSLER

According to Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Michelle Krebs, Chrysler had a good month – in fact, its best October since 2007. But, as expected, we’re not seeing the eye-popping year-over-year percentage increases we saw a year ago. This October is a respectable 10 percent higher than a year ago. It appears Chrysler’s fleet sales, which have been high, fell some this month. Sales of the Chrysler 200, popular with daily rental car companies, are down 22 percent. And Jeep sales declined as Chrysler winds down some models that will be replaced. On the plus side, Chrysler’s new models look to be doing well: the Dodge Dart small car had a good month, the revamped Ram pickup truck had a sales hike of 20 percent and the freshened Chrysler 300 saw significantly higher sales.

ON VOLKSWAGEN

“It’s the same tune, just another month for Volkswagen: a double-digit increase to sales levels not seen since the early 1970s. Volkswagen is destined for its best sales year since 1973,” Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Michelle Krebs.

ON NISSAN and HONDA

According to Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Jessica Caldwell, both Honda and Nissan missed sales expectations, but that’s understandable, since they are top brands in the areas affected by Sandy. Additionally, both companies are in  launch mode of their all-new midsize sedans (Altima and Accord), which is the most popular segment of vehicles in the affected storm zone. Midsize cars account for about 20% of sales in the greater NY/North NJ area.

Nissan Leaf has a good month – still less than half of Chevy Volt sales, but October was the car’s best month since August 2011. Lease deals are proving popular with an estimated 90% of new Leafs sold in October were to lease customers.
