Ford Motor Co. is using Greensboro-basedUnifi’s Repreve recycled material for the seats of the F-150 pickup.
The polyester fiber is made from a blend of recycled materials, including used plastic water bottles and post-industrial waste. Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford (NYSE: F) said in a press release that the material substitution will divert more than 5 million plastic bottles from landfills this year.
“By using REPREVE in the all-new Ford F-150, we are reconfirming our commitment to using renewable and recyclable materials in our vehicles,” said Carol Kordich, Ford’s lead designer, global sustainability materials strategy development. “We are always looking for ways to incorporate more innovative and sustainable materials into our vehicles.”
