AI might pull references for a mortgage APR—where terminology like points and escrow carries specific weight—and incorrectly apply that logic to a small-dollar consumer loan. A “close enough” calculation can mask a systemic error across an entire portfolio or channel.
Accuracy vs. Precision Up-Funnel
Consumers and regulators alike are demanding more transparency. The market has moved beyond asking the payment amount to asking why it is calculated that way. This shift requires accuracy and precision to move further up-funnel into the buying journey.
If your digital retailing platform uses an AI-generated estimate that is off by even a few dollars, you haven’t just lost a customer’s trust—you’ve potentially created a systemic compliance risk. Even early-stage estimates must be grounded in the same logic that will ultimately produce the final disclosure. If the calculation methodology changes later in the process, lenders risk creating inconsistencies that confuse consumers and complicate compliance reviews.
Lenders need payment calculations that match the first online quote all the way through document generation and funding, rather than accepting “range” estimates early in the funnel.
Logic as a Truth-Source
AI is an effective analytical tool, but in compliance‑critical calculations, truth must come from rules‑based logic, not probabilistic output.
Whether it’s understanding how a consumer’s residency impacts the applicable law or navigating the evolving usury crackdowns in states like New York, California, and Rhode Island, the human element remains the final line of defense.
