BLACK BOOK JANUARY DEPRECIATION REPORT SHOWS VEHICLE RETENTION STRENGTHENING TO SIGNAL AN EARLY START TO THE SPRING SELLING SEASON

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (February 13, 2018) – According to Black Book® data, the average price of a used vehicle for model years 2012-2016 depreciated in value by -2.6% during January, slightly lower than the -2.9% shown the previous month. Cars overall dropped -3.0% and trucks decreased -2.3% in value during January. All vehicles are averaging a 12-month depreciation of -14.5%.

Luxury Cars showed the highest depreciation in January at -3.6%. Vehicles in the Luxury Car segment include the Mercedes Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Lexus GS 350, Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF. Vehicles in this segment finished January with an average price of $19,383, a -19.8% change from a year ago.

Five other segments finished January with -3.0% depreciation or higher: Near-Luxury Cars at -3.4%; Compact Cars also at -3.4%; Subcompact Crossovers at -3.3%; Minivans at -3.1%; and Full-Size Cars at -3.0%.

Full-Size Vans finished January with the lowest depreciation at -1.4%. Vehicles in the Full-Size Van segment include the Ford T150, Ram 1500 Promaster, GMC G1500, Chevrolet G1500, Nissan NV 1500 and the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Vans.

Prestige Luxury Cars saw the lowest January depreciation amongst all car segments at -1.7%. Vehicles in the Prestige Luxury Car segment include the BMW 7-Series, Lexus LS 460, Porsche Panamera, Jaguar XJ, Mercedes Benz S-Class and the Audi A8. Vehicles in this segment finished January with an average price of $31,409, a -22.4% change from year-ago levels.

“In January we began to see the early signs of the spring selling season, starting with the monthly depreciation which was slightly lower than what we saw in December,” said Anil Goyal, Executive Vice President, Operations at Black Book. “We’re also seeing slightly better depreciation on car segments which is encouraging as the supply remains high in cars.”
