An inaugural quarterly report detailed recalls dealerships are having to deal with to begin 2024.
BizzyCar, a software platform that automates recalls for auto dealerships, published their first quarterly recall report that found more than nine million vehicles were affected by recalls in the first three months of 2024. Specifically, using data from the NHTSA and USDOT, a total of 105 recalls were made that affected 9,697,120 vehicles.
Company officials observed the recall data showed a noticeable uptick, underscoring a persistent challenge for the industry in maintaining automotive safety and quality assurance.
Electrical System Issues
“More than 100,000 vehicles are recalled a day in this country, with OEMs required by law to replace 100% of them,” said BizzyCar founder Ryan Maher in a press statement.
The report detailed the most recalls by manufacturer was Tesla, with over 2.4 million vehicles affected primarily due to electrical system issues. Other prominent manufacturers, such as Ford and Chrysler, reported significant numbers, reflecting broad challenges within the industry, according to BizzyCar officials.
The electrical system is notably problematic, with 26 recalls involving 2,775,496 vehicles. Airbags and powertrains, along with visibility components, showed significant issues as well.
Tesla Leads Vehicles Affected
Tesla heads the list with over 2.4 million vehicles affected, mainly due to electrical system issues. The top five were:
- Tesla: 2,400,001 vehicles
- Ford : 2,202,083 vehicles
- Chrysler: 963,375 vehicles
- Honda: 779,846 vehicles
- Toyota: 684,690 vehicles
In Q1 2024, three recalls totaling 91,193 vehicles indicated a potential fire risk and advising owners to park their vehicles outdoors to prevent property damage or personal harm.
Ford Tops Number of Recalls
As for the number of recalls by manufacturer, Ford led with 17 recalls. Rounding out the top were Chrysler (15), BMW and Mercedes-Benz tied with eight, and Hyundai (seven).
As a dealer, Maher said he built BizzyCar to connect a dealership with owners of recalled cars as it presents an opportunity to strengthen relationships for now and the future.
“I realized if I could find and schedule even a fraction of those recalls, not only would my profits increase exponentially, but because customers had to visit my dealership for the repair, my loyalty numbers would skyrocket,” said Maher.
