April 2012 Sales Numbers from Car Manufacturers, plus Analysis from Edmunds.com Analysts:
On General Motors, From Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Michelle Krebs: “After gaining market share in 2011, General Motors’ market share fell to its lowest level in decades two months ago. GM management claims it isn’t panicked and doesn’t plan to throw a lot of money at the market. But GM did increase incentives in April, both month over month and year over year, even as the overall industry hit its lowest incentive levels in almost seven years. GM’s newest models – the compact Buick Verano and subcompact Chevrolet Sonic – are bright spots, but there are only few of those to report this month. Cadillac remains under construction, as it awaits the introduction of its two new models. Buick, one of last year’s fastest growing brands, is back in decline, and even Chevrolet had a down month. Only GMC had higher sales this April compared to last year.”
On Ford, “Ford sales were down 5 percent from a year ago and the automaker is expected to struggle to match year-to-year comparisons as it replaces a couple of its biggest volume models. The Ford Escape is winding down to make way for the new version this summer, just like the Ford Fusion, which will be replaced in the fall. Despite winding down those two models, Ford has significantly lowered its overall incentives, which are estimated to be flat with a year ago but down nearly 13 percent from March.”
On Volkswagen, From Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Jessica Caldwell: “Volkswagen looks like it’s on the road to achieving its aggressive growth targets in the US. The company dominates the passenger car diesel market, which is a good position to be when consumers are still concerned with high fuel prices. This sort of brand depth gives VW something that really separates the German brand from its competitors.”
On Nissan, From Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Jessica Caldwell: “There is a lot of volatility in the Nissan numbers, and much of it has to do with the company’s fiscal year structure. Nissan finished its 2012 fiscal year with a frenzy in March, and as a result, month-over-month sales dropped by almost a half in April. It also doesn’t help that Nissan is in the midst of a change over to a new version of the Altima, which is the company’s volume leader, and accounted for 25 percent of all Nissan sales last month.”
On Chrysler, From Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs: “Chrysler had yet-another glowing sales report in April with gains across the board by brand and – with only a few exceptions – by model. Even better, its sales increases were not accomplished with beefy customer incentives, which were essentially flat from March, and up only a bit from a year ago. The full-blown launch in June of the Dodge Dart small car — Chrysler’s most significant new model in a long time — should give the company another nice boost.”
On Toyota, From Edmunds.com Sr. Analyst Jessica Caldwell: “What a difference a year makes for Toyota. This time last year, its market share started to decline from the supply shortage in Japan. But this year Toyota is hitting its stride with a new Camry and an expanded Prius lineup which is appealing to fuel price conscious consumers. None of their hybrid models – from Highlander to Prius c – are sitting on dealer lots for very long; each model averages less than 25 days to turn.”
GM Reports April Sales of 213,387 Vehicles
Increases 2012 Sales Outlook
DETROIT – General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) reported April sales of 213,387 vehicles in the United States. Retail sales were essentially equal to April 2011. GM’s fleet sales declined 25 percent due to the timing of rental customer deliveries, as previously indicated. As a result, total sales were down 8 percent.
Based on higher than expected first quarter industry sales and expectations that the U.S. economy will continue to grow, GM is increasing its full-year light vehicle sales forecast to 14.0 million – 14.5 million units from 13.5 million – 14.0 million units.
“We expect gradual improvement in the economy going forward,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “Over time, strength in the manufacturing sector and strong retail sales will lead to more job creation. That will help more consumers put the recession behind them, gain even more confidence and drive vehicle sales higher for both the industry and GM.”
GM’s two newest vehicles, the Chevrolet Sonic and the Buick Verano, continue to perform well. Chevrolet Sonic sales were 38 percent higher than the vehicle it replaced. Buick Verano sales reached 2,989 units and have increased each month since it went on sale in late November 2011. In addition, Chevrolet Volt sales of 1,462 units were strong nationally but limited by availability of vehicles in California, where GM is launching a model that qualifies for high-occupancy vehicle lane access.
Other highlights include a 7 percent year-over-year increase for the Cadillac CTS sedan, a 20 percent increase for the GMC Sierra, a 9 percent increase for the GMC Terrain, a 5 percent sales increase for the Chevrolet Silverado and a 7 percent increase for the Chevrolet Equinox.
On a selling-day adjusted basis, GM total sales were up 3 percent and retail sales were up 12 percent. On the same basis, Chevrolet retail sales were up 13 percent, Buick retail sales were up 8 percent, GMC retail sales were up 17 percent and Cadillac retail sales were essentially equal to a year ago. There were three fewer selling days in April 2012 than a year ago.

The Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram Truck, and FIAT brands each posted sales increases in April compared with the same month a year ago. “April was another strong month for Chrysler as our sales increased 20 percent, we recorded our 25th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth and we reported our strongest quarterly profit in 13 years,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO – Dodge Brand and Head of U.S. Sales. “This business is all about product and the quality and fuel efficiency of our current vehicle line-up has never been better which is evident in our results.”

April 2012 U.S. Sales Highlights by Brand
FIAT Brand
FIAT brand sales were up 336 percent in April compared with the same month a year ago, the largest year-over-year sales gain of any Chrysler Group brand. Combined sales of the Fiat 500, Fiat 500 Cabrio and Fiat 500 Abarth set a new sales record for any month. The Abarth, which went on sale in the U.S. in April, builds on the excitement of the Fiat 500 (Cinquecento), launched in the U.S. in March 2011. The new Abarth is designed for track-day enthusiasts and driving purists who want the ultimate high-performance small car with the pedigree of an exclusive Italian exotic at an attainable price.
Chrysler Brand
Chrysler brand sales were up 56 percent in April, the brand’s best April sales since 2007 and its 10th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. All three Chrysler models contributed to the brand’s strong showing in April. Sales of the Chrysler 300 full-size sedan were up 138 percent, the model’s best sales month since March 2008.
The Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans each posted double-digit sales gains in April compared with the same month last year. The Chrysler 200 mid-size sedan set an April sales record with its solid 61 percent increase versus the same month in 2011.

The winners will be honored May 17, 2012 at the WardsAuto Interiors Conference in Dearborn, Mich. The Chrysler 300 also was praised by Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com as one of the “10 Most Comfortable New Cars Under $30,000.”

HERNDON, Va., May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 37,525 units sold in April, a 31.5 percent increase over prior year sales, 38 percent increase year-to-date and the best April since 1971.
“The demand and enthusiasm for our products continues at a strong pace and we are beginning to see the fruits of our investments pay off, marking the best April in over forty years,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “As our sales continue to outpace the industry, we are investing in our infrastructure to ensure sustained growth.”
Last month, the company announced expansion plans for VW Credit Inc. (VCI) facility in Libertyville, IL. The ground breaking took place on April 20 for a 30,000-square-foot expansion of the facility. The multimillion-dollar expansion, to be completed early next year, will accommodate approximately 150 new jobs that VW Credit, Inc. expects to create through 2018. This comes on top of the additional 1,000 jobs that the company announced it would add at its manufacturing plant in Chattanooga, TN to meet growing demand of the 2012 Passat.

Hyundai Motor America Reports Best-Ever April Sales
– Total sales up despite three fewer selling days
– Second best month in company history
– For the year, 39 percent of all Hyundai vehicles sold have 40 MPG highway EPA labels
COSTA MESA, Calif., May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — HyundaiMotor America, the most fuel efficient automaker in the U.S., today announced an all-time April sales record of 62,264 units, up 1 percent over last year’s all-time April record, and the second best sales month in company history after last month’s all-time record. With three fewer selling days this April versus last April, Hyundai’s average daily sales rate improved 12 percent.
“Never has a relatively flat sales month felt quite so good,” said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s executive vice president of national sales. “We definitely felt some pullback from an overheated March sales pace but really picked up some momentum at the tail end of the month and finished with a flurry to set another all-time volume record. Vehicle availability continues to improve and our announcement just last night of the assembly plant expansion in Alabama will provide much needed production increases for our highly fuel efficient Sonata and Elantra sedans, while generating nearly 900 new jobs for the local economy.”
In its first month of sales, the all-new Azera is off to a torrid start with sales up 399 percent over last April, while Hyundai’s family of RWD premium products, Genesis and Equus, continue to deliver outstanding sales results with volume up 36 percent over a year ago. In an ongoing effort to meet retail demand, business to fleet accounts continues to run at less than a 10 percent mix, amongst the lowest levels in the industry.

Hyundai achieved a corporate average fuel economy level of 37.1 MPG (27.9 MPG label value) in April, while selling 23,632 vehicles (38 percent of total sales) with 40 MPG window label highway fuel economy ratings. “April was a great month for us, but low availability of our 40-mpg highway Accent, Veloster, and Elantra, three of the hottest cars in the industry, definitely impacted our final sales result,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “We’ll continue to work through these constraints with actions like the addition of a third shift at our Alabama plant later this year, which will help feed unmet demand for Elantra and Sonata.”

Kia Motors America Announces Record April Sales — Strong Demand for Optima, Soul and Sorento Leads to Kia’s 20th Straight Monthly Sales Record; Annual Sales Up 22.2 Percent
IRVINE, Calif., May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Kia Motors America (KMA) has been the fastest growing car company in the United States[1] over the past five years, and the brand’s strong momentum continued with best-ever April sales of 47,550 units. Kia has achieved 20 consecutive monthly sales records thanks in large part to continued high demand for the brand’s two U.S.-built* products – the Optima midsize sedan and Sorento CUV built at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) – as well as the ongoing popularity of the Soul urban passenger vehicle. Sales of the fuel-efficient 2012 Rio subcompacts, which can deliver up to 40 miles per gallon[2] on the highway, increased 55.6-percent over the same period in 2011.
“Our record April performance is the latest illustration of how far the Kia brand has progressed as we continue to attract new customers with our unique value formula of world-class design, outstanding fuel efficiency, premium features and cutting-edge technologies,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and KMMG.
“KMMG recently was named ‘Large Manufacturer of the Year’ by the State of Georgia, and the plant’s success is a major contributor to our growth. With more new products and technologies set to arrive within the next year, we will continue our efforts to raise consumer awareness and consideration for the Kia brand and our full lineup of stylish and fuel-efficient vehicles.
Kia’s Unprecedented Growth
Kia Motors is one of the world’s fastest moving global automotive brands; from 2009-2011 Kia launched more new vehicles in the U.S. than any other automaker, and under the guidance of chief design officer Peter Schreyer earned a reputation as an industry leader in automotive styling. Kia Motors America’s full line of fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive cars and CUVs has earned critical acclaim and dramatically increased consumer awareness, perception and consideration for the brand. In 2011, KMA recorded its 17th consecutive year of market share growth, thanks in part to the largest increase of any major brand in perceived quality[3] and the industry’s highest brand loyalty ranking[4].
Kia’s U.S.-based manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia – KMMG – is responsible for the creation of more than 10,000 plant and supplier jobs and builds two of the company’s best-selling vehicles in the U.S. – the Sorento CUV and Optima midsize sedan[5]. Kia’s value- and technology-laden 2012 model year lineup also includes the Sportage compact CUV, Soul urban passenger vehicle, Optima Hybrid, Forte compact sedan, Forte 5-door compact hatchback, Forte Koup two-door coupe, all-new Rio and Rio 5-door sub-compacts and Sedona minivan.
About Kia Motors America

KMA offers a complete line of vehicles through more than 755 dealers throughout the United States and serves as the “Official Automotive Partner” of the NBA and LPGA. In 2011, KMA recorded its best-ever annual sales total and became one of the fastest growing car companies in the U.S. Kia is poised to continue its momentum and will continue to build the brand through design innovation, quality, value, advanced safety features and new technologies.
