According to Edmunds.com’s AutoObserver, October’s Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) came in at about 13.2 million. The story said this is the second highest SAAR the industry has seen in 2011, just a little behind February’s SAAR.
Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell said on a conference call this week, this is the eighth month in a row with over 1 million units sold. October’s sales numbers were up 8% from last year at this time, but down 3% from last month.
Caldwell said the demand is switching to be heavier for trucks, taking the demand pressure off of the compact car segment. The industry is starting to see, according to Caldwell, an increase shopping interest for the midsized car segment, especially with Toyota’s new 2012 Camry.
On the car market in general, Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl: “High prices and inventory shortages in late April through August kept some consumers from the market. Netting it out, there were easily 200,000 sales that would have occurred this year that were deferred. These consumers started returning in September and have fueled a sales rebound. Depending on pricing and availability through December, most of this should play itself out by year-end. This suggests we should view sales in October with a degree of caution. The performance over the past few months is not the start of a trend. It is more of a mini-bubble. I do expect that the level of demand for vehicles will continue to rise until next year. There are a growing number of consumers for whom a new vehicle is becoming a necessity, but I expect the slope of this underlying trend to remain modest.”

–UPDATED: Ford Motor Company reported October U.S. sales increased 6% versus last year; year-to-date sales up 11%. Continued strong demand for Ford’s fuel-efficient utility vehicles and trucks lifted the company to a 6% increase in total sales in October.

–UPDATED: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars, Cayenne SUVs and the Panamera four-door sports sedan line-up in the United States, today announced October 2011 sales of 2,270 vehicles, a decrease of 14 % compared to the same period last year, when it sold 2,647 vehicles.
To date in 2011, sales are up 23 % compared to the same ten-month period last year. So far this year, the company has sold 24,934 cars, which compares to 20,337 vehicles last year.
“We’re very pleased with our year-to-date results,” said President and CEO, Detlev von Platen. “October’s sales numbers are expectedly down compared to last year, due to the fact that we are in the midst of a change-over with our all-new 911 model going on sale early next year. In addition, we have very low inventories of our Boxster and Cayman models.”
For the month of October 2011, Porsche’s Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales were 652, compared to 565 last year. The year-to-date total is 7,241, compared to 6,210 in the previous year – a 17 % increase.
